Sergiu-Mihai Hațegan, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the West University of Timișoara and a research assistant at the Institute for Advanced Environmental Research (ICAM), is one of the recipients of the “Young Researchers” Award presented at the 2025 UVT Awards Gala.
In a recent interview, the young researcher emphasizes the importance of investing in research and education, fields that, in his opinion, generate some of the greatest long-term benefits. Research not only offers solutions to current problems but also creates opportunities for future discoveries and sustainable development.
With a strong background in computational physics and astrophysics, Sergiu-Mihai Hațegan focuses his doctoral research on the study of solar energy, analyzing how solar radiation is influenced by the atmosphere and how these processes affect the performance of photovoltaic cells. His interests also include characterizing clouds from the perspective of solar radiation, an essential aspect for both energy production and climate modeling.
His academic experience includes international collaborations and participation in research projects dedicated to renewable energy, contributing to the optimization of smart systems based on sustainable sources.
Passionate about the complexity of nature, Sergiu-Mihai Hațegan views physics as a fundamental field, capable of explaining phenomena from the microscopic level to the cosmic scale, as well as providing tools applicable in diverse fields, from medicine to sociology.
