Atmospheric Cold Plasma—An Eco-Friendly Technology for Tomato Plant Growth
Cold plasma at atmospheric pressure is an innovative technology with potential applications in sustainable agriculture, as it is used to treat seeds before planting.
By generating reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, this method can alter the surface properties of seeds and stimulate the physiological processes involved in germination and early plant development.
A study conducted on two tomato genotypes (Solanum lycopersicum) showed that the duration of treatment is essential for the effectiveness of this technology. Exposing the seeds to cold plasma for one minute yielded the best results, promoting the growth of fresh, dry, and mineral biomass. In contrast, longer treatments—lasting 3 and 4 minutes—reduced growth parameters, suggesting that excessive exposure may cause physiological stress.
